What's open or closed for City of Ottawa on the August long weekend?

Colonel By Day is just around the corner. Here’s a list of schedule changes, planned activities and City of Ottawa services that are expected to be closed throughout the weekend and on the civic holiday, Monday, Aug. 7.

It is not a civic holiday in the province of Quebec.

OC Transpo will operate on Monday, though on a special holiday schedule.

Bus service will run on a Saturday schedule, with enhanced service on routes 25, 63, 74, and 85. Certain trips on routes 61, 63, and 75 will be extended to or from Gatineau during peak periods. Rural Shopper Route 301 will also be in operation.

O-Train Line 1 stations will remain closed, with a new express service implemented to augment the 36-bus R1 service. Line 2 bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule from 6:30 a.m. to midnight.

OC Transpo’s customer service phone line will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday. Its Rideau Centre location will be open Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lost and found at Heartwood House on McArthur Avenue will be closed Monday.

Para Transpo will run a holiday service on Monday, with scheduled trips cancelled. Customers can book trips until Friday online or by calling 613-560-5000 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The trip information and cancellation phone line will be open from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The Taxi Coupon line will remain open.

Many City of Ottawa pools, arenas and community centres will be open on modified schedules. Some regular public swims may be cancelled on short notice due to a shortage of lifeguards.

Britannia and Petrie Island beaches are expected to be open on Monday, with lifeguard supervision from noon to 7 p.m. Mooney’s Bay beach was closed for swimming on Tuesday while Ottawa Public Health investigated a suspected blue-green algae bloom in the water there, leaving its status for the holiday Monday unclear.

City splash pads will also be open.

All art centres, theatres, galleries, archives and museums will be closed on Monday.

All Ottawa stores, malls and grocery stores are able to open Monday, though some may operate with reduced hours.

Mall hours on Colonel By Day:

Most LCBO and Wine Rack stores are open on Monday. Only select Beer stores (on Bank St., Baseline Rd., Somerset St. W. and Montreal Rd.) will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Most restaurants, bars and businesses are open on Monday, Aug. 7, although may have reduced hours. Banks, Canada Post locations and federal and provincial government offices and will be closed.

Movie theatres are open all weekend.

Museums in the region are open on the weekend, with some operating on reduced hours. Museum hours on Colonel By Day:

Tours of the Senate of Canada Building, the East Block and the House of Commons Chamber in the West Block are running throughout the day.

All Ottawa Public Library branches will be closed on Monday.

There will be no curbside green bin, recycling, garbage or bulky item collection on Monday. That collection will take place on Tuesday and the process will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.

Multi-residential garbage containers will be collected on the regular scheduled days. Recycling containers, bulky items and green bins will be delayed by one day.

The Trail Road Waste Facility will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All municipal child care centres will be closed.

Dental clinics, the Sexual Health Clinic and satellite clinics, Parenting-In-Ottawa drop-ins, the Ottawa Public Health Information Centre and the COVID-19 booking line will be closed Monday.

The Site Needle and Syringe Program office and supervised consumption services at 179 Clarence St. will also be closed, though the mobile van will operate Monday between 5 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Normal city parking regulations and restrictions will be in place.

The city’s 3-1-1 contact centre will only open for urgent matters.

Client Service Centres at Ottawa City Hall, Ben Franklin Place, 580 Terry Fox Dr. and 255 Centrum Blvd. and the city’s Provincial Offences Court at 100 Constellation Dr. will be closed.

The Business Licensing Centre at 735 Industrial Ave. and the City of Ottawa Spay and Neuter clinic at 26 Concourse Gate will be closed.

While border crossings are open throughout the August long weekend, the Canada Border Services Agency warned in a news release of long wait times on Monday, suggesting Canadians choose another day to cross the border. The agency said to plan ahead of check border wait times on the CBSA website, encouraging travellers crossing the border by land to cross during non-peak hours such as early morning.
